A new airline, Fly Africa (M) Limited, is set to start flying in and out of Malawi on November 1 following its licensing in July, Minister of Transport and Public Works Mohammad Sidik Mia has confirmed.

The Nation understands that Fly Africa (M) Limited has three Boeing 737-300 and two Cessna 208 Caravan aircrafts scheduled for passenger and cargo services.

The airline will fly both domestic and international routes and has since been licensed to operate for the initial one-year period.

“They have been granted licence to fly non-scheduled flights because they are relatively new in Malawi. They will be flying domestically to Blantyre, Lilongwe and Mzuzu. Internationally, they will fly to Johannesburg, South Africa,” said Mia in an interview yesterday.

He said Fly Africa (M) is a locally registered company with international partners.

Mia added that the company bid for Air Malawi (when it was privatised).

Ethiopian Airlines emerged the strategic equity partner for Malawian Airlines Limited, Air Malawi’s successor.

The minister welcomed the new airline to fly in and out of Malawi, saying it will give a wide choice to passengers in the country.

Commenting on when the Malawian Airlines Limited would start operating, Mia said the company is going through a certification process, but indicated that the airline might start flying in the next six weeks.

The coming in of new airlines onto the scene would create competition in the aviation industry, which could result in the exorbitant fares currently being experienced going down.
